Island Hopping in Greece! | The Syros Travel Guide!

There’s one thing that is for certain about Greece – it’s BEAUTIFUL! And with this type of beauty, the crowds of people on certain islands can seem endless. But if you’re looking for that perfect island vacation that won’t have you bumping into a ton of people to get around, then Syros just might be the place for you!

BEAUTIFUL Syros, Greece!

Syros is a small island located in the Cyclades and is in the heart of the Aegean Sea. It holds the title of the administrative hub of the Cyclades and is rich in Greek history & culture. As you pull into the port of Syros, you can’t help but to be enamored by the cluster of pastel colored villas in the distance! You are now in the capital, Ermoúpolis.

Hiking the hill above Ermoúpolis, you will reach the traditionally Catholic community of the island, Ano Syros!

For the 1st timers to Greece, let’s get into the basics of the islands before you start your trip planning!

Check out the Greece International Travel Info page for visa info, passport validity & more!

The best times to visit Syros – The best weather is from May – September (June & July will be the hottest months). The best weather for swimming/beaches is June – September.

It will definitely be more expensive to visit the Greek isles in the Summer months due to high tourism!

The airport of Syros is small and does not get very busy. It services daily domestic flights from Athens and the flight time is 40 min. The airport of Syros is located just over a mile/2 km from Ermoúpolis. Flights to Syros can be booked on Sky Express.

Syros is located centrally in the Aegean Sea and it serves as connections to many other islands – Andros, Mykonos, Tinos & more. There are ferries from Syros to Piraeus, the main port of Athens everyday. Ferries can booked using the companies below –

Greek Ferries GR Hellenic Seaways | Blue Star Ferries

On this trip, we used Blue Star Ferries from Mykonos to Syros (1-hour trip time) and then from Syros to Santorini (5-hour trip time).

Where to stay in Syros

For our very short stay in Syros, we decided to stay in a budget, family-friendly hotel that was close to the port of Syros.

Paradise Rooms

Since there were 4 of us, we rented 2-double bed rooms (twin rooms) for €40 euros a night each. The room was very basic, but just what we needed for 1 night. It was clean and close to the restaurants, bars & the central square.

What I enjoyed most about this room was the convenience. We were able to bar hop that night – stumble back to the room then wake up the next morning and grab breakfast at the square which is near the ferry port.

Syros, Greece was not a part of our original plans (we were supposed to visit los, but the ferry company canceled the route). In order for us to get to Santorini from Mykonos on time, we had to do an overnight stay on this island. Since I didn’t know ANYTHING about Syros….I pretty much let destiny do it’s thing. No research whatsoever was done on my part for this island. We just showed up.

And I’m glad we did!

Things to do in Syros

☀️ The Town Hall of Ermoúpolis on Miaouli Square – Built in 1876, this Town Hall is one of the largest and most impressive Town Halls in Greece! This is a very unique building that holds a ton of history! However, walking through it made me feel like I was in a scary movie. For whatever reason, it was a bit eerie to me, yet exciting! Definitely check it out! Very beautiful!

The Town Hall of Ermoúpolis on Miaouli Square is a must see while in Syros!

☀️ Ano Syros – Take a ride through this beeeeautiful, authentic & quiet city. Check out the distinct houses, cobbled streets and breathtaking views!

☀️ Agios Nikolaos (Asteria Beach) – Without a doubt, this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Syros and close to the island’s capital! Asteria is known for it’s pristine waters! While it’s not your typical beach, it is NOT to be missed on a trip to Syros!

My son enjoying beautiful, Syros!

Restaurants & Nightlife in Syros

Syros has a very lively bar/restaurant scene – which made for a great night out bar hopping:

☀️ Mammo Wine & Food Bar – I can’t rave enough about this place! We came for a drink or 2, and ended up staying the majority of the night! AH-MAZING customer service, dope music (shout out to the DJ, Markos Drossos) and the cocktails…….EXCELLENT! This spot is not to be missed in Syros!

☀️ Laoutari Kafrenio (Cafe) – This restaurant is a very interesting looking place, known for it’s creative Greek cuisine! They don’t have an extensive menu, but it works! The baked feta with sun dried tomatoes is delicious! My friend had a seafood dish that she raved about from this spot as well!

☀️ Elliniko Kafeneio – Greeaaaaaaat place for breakfast! Situated directly at Miaouli Square, this spot is known for it's omelets, homemade lemonade, coffee & more!

☀️ Asteria Beach Bar – One of the more popular bars in Syros! The views of the Aegean Sea are stunning here! The cocktails are good….but can get a bit pricey!

Well this wraps up our short trip to this beautiful island! Again, Syros was not apart of our original itinerary, but it worked out for us in order to get to Santorini on time!

We made wonderful memories on this amazing island and I can't wait to visit again in the future! Until next time!

Happy travels to Syros!
