Staying at AZULIK Tulum solo | Azulik Hotel Review!

Show of hands if you’re like me and have had dreams of staying in a treehouse since you were a kid. Yes? Then get in here and let’s explore Tulum’s eco-friendly, Mayan culture inspired, clothing optional resort!

AZULIK Tulum is made up of 48 unique, wooden villas nestled between the tropical jungle and the breathtaking Caribbean Sea! This rustic, jungle retreat (made entirely of wood & clay) is ready to welcome travelers who are in search of rest, relaxation & rejuvenation.

A couple of years ago while aimlessly scrolling Instagram, I came across Azulik and was completely blown away! The architecture alone stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought to myself, “Woooooooow! This must be some type of magical IG filter to make this place look like this”! But after a little research my suspicions were proven to be wrong. There is a legit ALL ADULT treehouse in Tulum, Mexico! So y'all know I had to go check it out!

Azulik is located in Tulum which is about 1.5 hours from Cancun. You can schedule transportation through Azulik (the more expensive option), take a taxi from Cancun's airport (which is about $100 USD one way. I used Yákata Transfers - great service), or catch the ADO bus from Cancun to Tulum's ADO station and take a taxi from there to the hotel (least expensive option, but will take longer).

Once I arrived at Azulik, I was met by the host with a welcome drink and then taken by one of the Azulik “Angels” to view the property and to be escorted to my villa. While in route, I participated in a traditional Mayan ceremony to cleanse myself of toxins & negative energy. Very nice touch, compliments of Azulik! Touring the property was simply incredible. The wooden-winding walkways is really something you'd have to see to believe! WOW!

In my opinion Azulik is marketed as a resort for couples to come relax, reconnect with one another and enjoy each other’s company. I visited as a solo-traveler and after checking into my villa, I totally see why this place is great for couples! The room is romantic, eccentric and made for lovers ready to “get it in” on vacation, okaaaaaay?!

The jacuzzis at Azulik are so dope! Next time....I'm coming back with somebody's son (LOL)!

I was truly amazed walking into the jungle villa! I could hear the ocean in the distance which made me even more ready to experience this bungalow for the night. The villa was exceptionally clean and lit with candles for the evening. Once I caught a glimpse of that beautiful mosaic bathtub, I knew it was time to go soak, unWINE and power down to some mellow music (Maxwell & Sade Adu to be exact)!

Before I breakdown the details of this stunning villa, let's go over a few things about this hotel!

☀️ There is NO electricity. There is NO A/C. There is NO TV. The purpose of this is to reconnect with nature and disconnect from the rest of the world so to speak. That being said, it gets pretty hot & humid in the room - especially in the day time. At night when I got warm, I opened up the door to the patio to let the ocean breeze (& the full moon) in. It was simply AMAZING!

☀️ There is NO WiFi in the room. However WiFi is available in the commons areas: the lobby, restaurants, etc.

☀️ If there are any issues with your villa, you will need to walk to the guest reception desk which is nearby. No guests phones are in the rooms.

☀️ There is no shower in the room. The property does have showers at the beach for rinsing off.

☀️ Candles will be lit in your room at night for “light”. It’s an incredibly relaxing experience once you adjust to being without electricity.

☀️ There is no actual pool onsite, but each villa comes with a jacuzzi or your own private pool (depending on the villa you select).

☀️ Azulik is an adults only hotel (18 & up) and it is clothing optional. So keep an open mind!

☀️ This hotel has a strict camera policy! Professional photography is NOT allowed at Azulik. A small sign at the check-in desk will warn you of this. No professional cameras, drones, stabilizers, etc. If you are caught with any of this, the hotel will charge a $2,000 fee in USD. (Yikes)!

☀️ At night, Azulik gets DARK! If you're walking around the property, use the flashlight on your phone to navigate.

☀️ Bring plenty of mosquito repellent. Actually - DROWN yourself in mosquito repellent!

Azulik offers several different types of villas for guests to enjoy:

Jungle Villa Mayan Villa | Sea Villa | Sky Villa Moon Villa | Aqua Villa

For my short stay I decided to go with the Jungle Villa -

This 14 m²/ 150 sq. ft. villa comes with an extra king sized bed & bed fan, large mosquito net, a handmade Mayan mosaic bathtub, an extra large patio, sitting area, outdoor jacuzzi, a power outlet + more! These bungalows are designed for up to 2 people, but it could easily sleep 3 comfortably.

Inside the Jungle Villa @ Azulik Tulum!

So there were a few things I absolutely LOVED and a couple of things I did not while staying at Azulik.

LOVE: The mosquito net over the bed. It's lovely and makes for great pics! | The large terrace surrounded by the jungle with the outside jacuzzi. | The super RELAXING mosaic bathtub. | The comfortable chaise lounge bed. | The lack of privacy - while a little weird at first (you can kinda' see through the bamboo blinds in the villa) actually became pretty interesting as the night went on.

DID NOT LOVE: I had a ground floor villa and could hear EVERYTHING from the guests above me. | The bed itself is not comfortable. The mattress is extremely firm which made it a little hard to sleep, but the pillows are great! | A little more extra space to hang up clothes would be nice, but this wasn't a big deal. | There is a peculiar smell around the pond/cenote area of Azulik, but didn't affect the villas in any way.

Ready to stick your toes in the sand and get a drink in your hand? Of course you are! Then grab a swing at the beach bar or lounge around on the sun beds while you enjoy your delicious cocktails & food! Azulik's beach is a private beach cove and is only open to guests of the hotel. The beach is small but secluded enough for the daring ones ready to strip away their bikini bottoms & swim trunks.

Azulik's beach is swimmable but be aware that a lot of Tulum's beaches are affected by sargassum (seaweed) from time to time. This will turn the beach water brown at the surface. The folks of Tulum have definitely been working hard to get this under control.

Besides a little bit of sargassum, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed myself at Azulik's beach & beach bar! The service was awesome, the Mojitos were crazy good and the dance music kept me doing just that! I even engaged in conversation with a man sitting next to me at the bar swings....just letting it all hang out (if you know what I mean)!

Love to shop? Good, because Azulik has dipped into the fashion game to bring their guests super swanky boutiques:

ZAK IK  & IK _RAUM

Need to unwind and relax your muscles for a bit? Azulik offers a soothing wellness spa and yoga every morning!

Ready for a bite to eat? Azulik has 3 restaurants to choose from:

Kin Toh (Mayan-Mexican cuisine) | Tseen Ja (Japanese & Mexican cuisine) | Cenote (American-Mexican cuisine)

I've tried all 3 restaurants at Azulik and I can't say that I was 100% impressed by the food. It's rather expensive and underwhelming honestly.

Kin Toh is upscale & expensive, but it's a great spot to maybe grab a cocktail and watch the sunset. Tseen Ja's setting is stunning as well. It's located in a treehouse. The crazy thing about this restaurant is it would shake slightly without warning at any given moment which freaked me out...but at the same time intrigued me. The sushi is pretty good there. I checked out Cenote for breakfast and had an omelette. It was just.....OK. There are plenty of other eateries in the area if Azulik is not your choice to dine.

All in all my stay at Azulik was absolutely FABULOUS! It was a very different hotel experience but amazing nonetheless. If I had to rate my experience, I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars! Although I enjoyed the peace & quiet on my own, Azulik is definitely designed for couples. I'll be returning next time with somebody's fine ass son for sure! (LOL)!

I visited in October so the weather was extremely pleasant....but I can only imagine what it would be like staying here in the Summer months (whew! There is a bucket of sweat on the floor next to me just thinking about it)!

Rooms rates for Azulik range anywhere from $350 per night to several thousand per night depending on the villa type and the seasons! (October is the off season. The rate wasn't as much compared to the summer months).

Happy travels to Tulum!
